The tunes of 2K
The year
is over and its time to look back at those tunes that got us up and dancing
through the many partys of 2k! If there is anything you think should be here
e-mail to the usual address and I'll
put it up!
(They are in no particular order!)
1. Modjo
- Lady (Hear me tonight) [MP3]
Along with Touch Me one of the girls favourites of 2k.Cool and clubby with
a sexy bassline that wraps itself around your hips and shakes them about a bit.
2. Rui
Da Silva - Touch Me [MP3]
Premiered by Antony who loves to tell everyone that it was in his box at
the start of March! Yet to meet someone who hates it!
3. Knights
of the Jaguar - DJ Rolando [MP3]
Another Antony premier. An update on the classic sound of Detroit techno
welding it to a gliding rush of Latin rhythms and woozy string flourishes.
4. Moby
- Porcelain [MP3]
The highlight of my Glastonbury experience quite easily. Looking back on
someones shoulders at more people than I have ever seen and feeling absolutly
fantastic as I was taken away with the music.
5. Badly
Drawn Boy - Stone on the Water [MP3]
What an album, prob my favourite of 2k. Perfect for putting on after the
club, in the morning, while making dinner - anytime!
6. Alan
Braxe and Fred Falke - Runnin (Intro) [MP3]
In case you were wondering the sample used is "Crush on you" by the Jets.
The bassline is what makes it funky, and you can't get much funkier than this.
But why is it so short!
7. Laurent
Garnier - Man with The Red Face [MP3]
Decisions on this choice, do I go for the original or the Jan Driver remix.
Both are equally good but I think I will stick with the original. Coming in
at just over 11 minutes this is a long track. Strangly enough not another exclusive
for Antony but heard Dan play this at many a party.
8. Bob
Sinclair - I Feel For You [MP3]
Opinions are divided on
this one, people either love it or hate it, but I love it so it's going in!
9. Roni
Size feat. Method Man - Ghetto Celebraty [MP3]
At last a decent bit of Drum 'n' Bass after waiting for ages. Method Mans style
complemets the track perfectly. Shame the rest of the album wasn't as good.
10. Pharoahe
Monch - Simon Says [MP3]
Bit of jump
around hip hop. Intro reminds me of the reaction when House of Pain's Jump Around
used to be played. As soon as you hear the first 3 notes the place goes crazy!
The Roni Size remix was quite good as well!
11. Destinys
Child - Bugaboo [MP3]
Not usually a fan of R&B but Destinys Child stand out by making excellent
music (even if their line up changes every other week).
12. Azzido
Da Bass - Dooms Night (Timo Mass remix) [MP3]
What can we say about this tune apart from it seemed to tear up dancefloors
all over the country. The House kids loved it, the Garage boys loved it, even
the Drum 'n' Bass massive loved it (Cranked up to +16 on their modified Technics!)
Prob the best bassline this year! And to top it off Stantion Warriors released
a remix at the end of the year that I feel is better than the original!
13. DJ
Zinc - 138 Trek [MP3]
From one of the True Playaz camp comes a wicked bit of breakbeat garage. I'll
leave it up to you to guess to first played the original but the version I have
up here, with MCing by GQ, was first played by Darren.
14. Spiller
- Groovejet [MP3]
Another memory of Glastonbury
and also Easter in North London with Sarah playing imaginary harps. Nothing
can be said about this that hasn't before. So I won't! Oh, this is the original
version without the lyrics.
15. St.
Germain - Rose Rouge [MP3]
Ludovic Navarre and his
St.Germain project need no real introduction (remember the fantastic Boulevard
Series on FNAC in 1995?). Now signed to Blue Note, a label famous for releasing
cutting edge jazz music (both classy contemporary and new school) and assisted
by Pascal Ohse on trumpet, Edouard Labor on sax/flute, Alexandre Destrez on
keyboards and Edmondo Carneiro on percussion, St Germain are once again fusing
house, jazz, dub and ambient sounds into an organic, danceable brew. Rose Rouge
was the first single to be released from the critically acclaimed album Tourist.
16. Air
Frog - Bon Voyage [MP3]
Bit darker and harder.
Huge at the Bugged Out weekender. Due for re-release in 2001 on Svek records
with new mixes from Adam Beyer.
17. Hatiras
- Spaced Invader [MP3]
Originally an import from
Canada, picked up by Defected. Played by everyone from Roger Sanchez (-4) to
Dave Clarke (+4)
18. Jill
Scott - Gettin' In The Way (MJ Cole mix) [MP3]
Beautiful remixing from
the Garage man of the moment, MJ Cole
18. Masters
At Work - To Be In Love (MJ Cole mix) [MP3]
Talking of MJ Cole here's
another masterful reworking of Masters At Works amazing To be In Love
