Restore Store icon to iPhone and iPad Kindle app

by Charles Astwood. Average Reading Time: about a minute.

So I, like the rest of the world, hated the fact that Apple forced Amazon to remove the link to buy from the Kindle store in their app, wanting instead to force users to make in-app purchases, from which 30% of goes back to Apple. Considering it has been said that Amazon make a maximum of 30% on ebooks, that would leave them getting nothing out of the deal. Not to mention it’s a pain to have to leave the app, try to find the mobile version of the site, and so on…

It occurred to me that I could create a book that re-enabled the links and put one click (well, two click) shopping back in the app. This idea worked so well I’m putting them up here for anyone to use.

It’s pretty simple to install. Download the correct book (links below) for your territory. At the moment I’ve covered the UK and US, if you want others please leave a comment and I’ll make it.

Once you have downloaded the right one, go to iTunes, and click on your iPhone/iPad in the left hand column.

Then click on Apps at the top of the main screen and you will see the Kindle icon under File Sharing Apps. Click this and in the Kindle Documents window click Add…

Use the file you downloaded earlier and re-sync your iPhone/iPad. When you open Kindle next, it will sync and you will see a new book titled Amazon Kindle Store. Simply open this and click the link to go to the store.

Thanks so much for the instructions. Obviously, I am one of the millions who are incensed by the increasing reach of apple.

I wonder if you could elaborate on your directions. Do I download the “book” to my main computer or my iPhone?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Dear Mr. Astwood,

I’m very grateful for this workaround, but I have a few questions:

I s the “book” downloaded to my computer or to my iphone, which is then hooked up to itunes? It’s unclear to me where the .mobi book is 1st downloaded to.

    Thanks for your help,
    Dee
