OSX Server DesktopDB bug
The
information in this article applies to:
OSX Server 1.2
This article describes how to fix the OSX Server bug where Appleshare clients would be kicked off the network but the server appears to be working as normal.
The DesktopDB files
on the drives are corrupt, currently thought to be because of bad file names,
and have to be rebuilt.
Boot up in OS 8.6 mode. Using FileBuddy or similar make the DesktopDB files visible and trash them. Let the Finder rebuild the Desktop files.
To reboot the server either get physical access and reboot as usual. It is only the Appleshare service that shuts down. Samba, Web Admin etc will continue to work as normal.
You can also telnet into the server and su (superuser) yourself. Once you have doen this type halt or reboot. The server will now restart safely.
